Depiction is a ubiquitous and salient grammatical component of ASL (Dudis, 2007; Thumann, 2010); however, it is an extremely difficult ASL construction for non-native users to master (Taylor, 2002; QuintoPozos, 2005). With most ASL interpreters being second language users of ASL (Winston & Cokely, 2009), producing successful instances of depiction, not only in their own language productions, but also in their interpretations, is a challenge. Depiction is a linguistic feature that must be overtly discussed, studied, and practiced. This workshop will give participants working knowledge of depiction, give examples of native signers, and give opportunities to practice incorporating this grammatically required feature of ASL in their own productions of ASL and interpretations.
